My blog has been completely neglected for 18 months, and I've struggled to come up with a subject worthy of my dusting it off again. Well, I've been asked so many questions about my dabble into the Keto lifestyle, so I thought that maybe this was worth it.
You've been living under a rock if you haven't heard of "Keto", short for Ketogenic (the Ketongenic Diet). It has been getting really, really big, and there are some serious success stories out there. For the months of March and April I participated in an 8 week challenge with my gym, where I tried to work out consistently, while sticking to an eating programme. This was my chance for me to "do something for me", and I'd been thinking about doing one of these challenges for over a year.
N.B. I am not a nutritionist, this is all just my observations, learnings and understanding.
One of the eating plans was Keto, and it was something that I was curious to try, especially since it wasn't too far from my standard low carb, high healthy fat / protein diet. It basically meant that I had to make sure I was getting plenty of good protein at each meal, and topped myself up with as much fat as I needed to feel satiated. When eating like this, your body will (hopefully) go into ketosis, where it learns to burn fat for fuel, rather than carbs, resulting in fat loss and hopefully improved athletic performance.

Here's my take on an over-simplified summary:
Do eat:
Protein
Fat
Greens
Low carb Veg
Berries
Don't eat:
Sugar
Fruit
Carbs
Processed food
My concern was that I'd be having way too much animal protein and fat for my liking, and for sustainability, so my personal goal was to try and achieve this with as much plant-based food as possible.

Eating keto goodies after birthday WOD |
The cons: it's SUPER EXPENSIVE, as you're just eating the expensive foods. This wasn't a big deal for me as a female who doesn't really eat many carbs anyway, but for Sam (who is currently doing his own Keto challenge) it is getting darn pricey. It's also really unsustainable as you have to go eat so many foods that are costly and tough on the planet to produce.
My biggest question mark is around its health repercussions in the long term. I believe that there is a place for fruit, natural sugar, unprocessed carby veg and whole grains in the diet. Eating too much animal protein/fat isn't something I believe to be great for you in the long run either, so I'd be hesitant to stay Keto for a massively extended period of time. That being said, for many people, eating Keto is WAY more healthy than their regular diets, so this is just for me.
What were your results from the 8 weeks, I hear you say? Well, I lots 2.5kg, which was a massive amount for me, and a bunch of centimetres off my waist and thighs. My gains at the gym were HUGE too, and I generally felt great by the end of it!
Many people when starting out on Keto get the "Keto flu" and feel generally rubbish for a couple of weeks. I wasn't too affected by this, but I did experience a whole lot of scary pins and needles in my hands and feet, supposedly because my already low blood pressure went through the floor. This rectified within a couple of weeks with lots of electrolyte and salt supplementation.
If you were to ask me if I'd recommend it, I'd say hell yeah! But learn from it, make good habits and then come back to a balanced diet.
