Dubrovnik, Croatia

Our first and only impression of Croatia is of the gorgeous Dubrovnik region. Sam and I were fortunate to act as escorts for a tour organized by the ship to Dubrovnik old town, the beautiful Konavle Valley and the seaside town of Cavtat.

When you escort a group you have a badge that identifies you, you carry a paddle to help the group to keep together and must walk at the back of the group. You are on the tour for free as a representative from the ship and are there to help the tour guide. It is a pretty great deal for us at any rate! For Dubrovnik Sam and I were on the same tour, but were with different buses/groups. Here I am with my paddle:

The old city is stunning. The “King’s Landing” from the Game of Thrones series is filmed here and it is easy to see why the town was selected. There is a medieval wall surrounding the city (visitors to the town were required to bring a rock of over 1kg weight as payment to enter the city when it was being built). The streets are entirely paved and narrow, and there is a friendly hustle and bustle about the city. The market was my favourite spot as the traditional Croatian foods available for tasting were candied almonds, hazelnuts and other nuts and crystalised fruits.

We then drove through the Konavle Valley, which reminded me of Central Otago, to an outdoor restaurant on the banks of the Ljota River, which is known as the angry river. This was formed into a tidy flow by the Romans. We had the choice of trout caught in the river or veal, both slow-cooked by traditional methods, with no power.

After lunch we visited the town of Cavtat, which the locals call their Monte Carlo, as it is a popular spot for yachts to stop. We hope to return to this spot when we visit Dubrovnik in the future.
